Activity 2: The Seven Sisters
There was a man called Mitai in the village of maketu. He was raised by his koroua. he learnt lots of magic things from him. One day when his big strong handsome brothers went to hunt they heard the most beautiful singing voice. They saw 7 ladies and they immediately fell in love their youngest brother warned them not to but they did not listen. The only thing they ate was seafood. When the oldest brother came home he did not find his wife so he went to check his brother houses and there wives weren't there. When one of the wives came back her husband asked her where she had went. She flew in a terrible rage. When Mitai went to his koroua. His koroua gave them magic nets. The next day when the seven fairies started to come out of their houses the seven boys caught them in a net and gave them to Mitai who turned into an albatross. He took the seven girls to the god of the star. Then the god of the stars sent them to the farthest heavens and farthest away from the earth. He let's them show their beauty once a year.

ReplyDeleteDid you enjoy listening to this story? There are quite a few stories associated with Matariki. There are also Matariki events that you can go to - I'm sure there will be some in Christchurch. I went to one in Nelson last year where there was a lantern trail, performances and a hangi. It was really fun but also really cold at night!
